UKAEA wishes to engage with potential prime contractors, SME’s and manufacturers for the procurement and supply of a Diffusion Bonding Furnace for the UKAEA.

As part of a renovation and upgrade plan of the Special Techniques Group (STG) capabilities, new diffusion bonding equipment has been identified to be added as a key capability, to give STG increased capability to support fusion and similar commercial work. The Diffusion Bonding Furnace will be housed at UKAEA’s premises in Culham, UK. The Diffusion Bonding Furnace shall be installed and ready for use by UKAEA by the 31st March 2024 at the latest.

Through this process we are looking to open up engagement with suppliers to ensure there is sufficient production capability and capacity to meet project timelines and requirements.

By engaging with suppliers at an early stage we hope to understand potential trade-offs of cost-effective size, vacuum levels, material strengths at temperature, etc. We very much welcome feedback to focus the upcoming tender on what is within the high-end of manufacturing capability and not overly bespoke.

After the engagement exercise, UKAEA intend to issue an Invitation to Tender.
