two.1.4) Short description

The Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) Maritime Combat Systems (MCS) Underwater and Electronic Warfare (UEW) team is responsible for providing in-service support (ISS) to Ships Protective Systems (SPS) equipment across the Royal Navy (RN) Fleet and Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) direct to Platform teams and front-line units.

As part of this in-service support Cathodic Protection (CP) and Shaft Grounding (SG) are two groups of equipment used in SPS:

a. CP prevents hull and component corrosion by using sacrificial anodes and/or impressed current systems. Corrosion can reduce the safety and reliability of ships’ structures and components. The deterioration of these structures causes higher maintenance costs, early system failures, or an overall shortened service life.

b. SG protects the propeller components against corrosion by grounding the static electricity, generated by the turning propeller, to the hull.
