HEIW have a leading role in the education, training, development, and shaping of the healthcare workforce, supporting high-quality care for the people of Wales.

The Dental Postgraduate Section of HEIW are seeking training provider(s) to provide quality training in Adult & Paediatric Basic Life Support & Management of Common Medical Emergencies to dental professionals based in NHS dental practices throughout Wales.

All NHS dental practices are inspected by Healthcare Inspectorate Wales (HIW) and the inspection process is underpinned by national health care regulations and standards that set out key expectations of the training undertaken by dental professionals to ensure patient safety.

Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) is a Special Health Authority that sits alongside Health Boards and Trusts within NHS Wales. The Dental Postgraduate Section of HEIW are seeking training provider(s) to provide quality training in Adult & Paediatric Basic Life Support & Management of Common Medical Emergencies to dental professionals based in NHS dental practices throughout Wales.

All NHS dental practices are inspected by Healthcare Inspectorate Wales (HIW) and the inspection process is underpinned by national health care regulations and standards that set out key expectations of the training undertaken by dental professionals to ensure patient safety.

All dental professionals are registered with the General Dental Council (GDC) and are expected to work to prescribed standards. The GDC stipulates that all registrants must follow the guidance on Medical Emergency training updates issued by the Resuscitation Council UK. The Resuscitation Council document ‘Quality Standards for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Practice and Training’ is its main medical guidance document for Dental Professionals that the GDC expects compliance with. In addition, the GDC endorses the Resus Councils guidance that all clinical areas should have immediate access to an automated external defibrillator (AED).

All staff must be appropriately trained and competent to meet the requirements set out above. The GDC sets out that all registered Dental Professionals should complete at least 2 hours a year every year of training in Medical Emergencies and basic life support, to maintain their registration.

The successful training provider(s) will report to the Dental Postgraduate Section of Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) at agreed intervals and to specified requirements.

The contract requirement is as follows:

The Dental Postgraduate Section of HEIW are seeking to commission 2 life support courses to dental professionals based in Cardiff and Vale, Aneurin Bevan Local Health Boards and North Powys. Details of these courses are as follows:

1. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, automated external defibrillation and the recognition and management of common medical emergencies

2. The clinical management of medical emergencies including the administration of emergency medication
