Plans set out in the NHS Long Term Plan build on the ambitions of the Five Year Forward View for Mental Health and will see the number of people with anxiety disorders or depression who can access talking therapies through IAPT increase by an additional 380,000 per year to reach 1.9 million by 2023/24.

A time-limited opportunity is to be made available for staff already working in IAPT services delivering Step 2 interventions to undertake an assessment of competence as an alternative to undertaking the full PWP training. Those who pass will receive a certificate of competence allowing them to practice as a PWP.

HEE, in collaboration with NHSE/I, intends to commission two providers for the PWP competency assessment provision (Q4, 2020/21), to start in early 2021 to address service demand for this course.
